Now that the First committtee has been formed, all the correspondence is gathered on this page. We start with Mike & Heather's announcement:

Since our communication in December 2010 we have carried a further detailed review of this business and our own personal circumstances and future needs. We have also sought professional advice and have to conclude that the shop will no longer be financially viable for us beyond 2012.
On a personal note, we both regularly work over 100 hours per week and with Mike reaching retirement age in 2013 we no longer wish to continue working at this pace by then. After 16 years we feel very settled in West Down and have made many friends here. It is therefore our intention to stay here at Pipcott and continue with the Soft Furnishings, Tea Room and Caravan & Camping businesses. We intend to convert the shop (and rooms above) back to a residential property.
We have made this announcement earlier than anticipated to allow the Parish to seriously consider the possibility of building a new purpose built community village shop within the grounds of the Parish Hall.
We would suggest that this could be achieved, if there is the will, along the lines of the Berrynarbor model (i.e. run by volunteers from within the community)
We would also suggest that a very strong case could be made to gain financial assistance in the form of grants from the Fullabrook Community Interest Company (CIC), and possibly other sources.
Local groups and organisations are now invited to contact the CIC with an 'Expression of Interest' which after consideration, if successful, would lead to an invitation to make a full application for grant assistance.
Obviously before any of this can happen, there needs to be much communication and discussion within the local community and we would ask if our Parish Council could provide a steer on how this should be done.      Other postings - latest first

West Down Community Shop Project

Newsletter 1 (February 2012)

Dear Resident
As you are aware, Mike and Heather Reeves will be closing our village shop before the end of December 2012. In response to this, the West Down Community Shop Project committee was set up in September 2011, and the committee have been busy getting the essential foundations for the project set in place. Time is marching on, so here is our first newsletter to keep you up to date with progress.

So far we have:-
Agreed a site with the Parish Hall Committee. The building may be on the north side of the present car park.
Agreed to work with the Parish Hall Committee in establishing the design and size of the building along with a parking area.

The Next Steps:-Working together with you all to ascertain the needs of the village and ensure that we provide the best possible facilities for the community.

Forming an Industrial and Provident Society (IPS) to oversee the running of the shop.

Looking for volunteers to serve on the committee managing the IPS. (Some of the members of the Project committee will not be joining the IPS management committee.)

Selling shares in the IPS. This will provide an opportunity for everyone to get involved by buying a £1 share, which will give you a vote in the running of the shop. You will be able to buy as many £1 shares as you want, but only one vote per person is allowed under the rules of the IPS. (The minimum age for buying shares will be 14.) Donations to the IPS will also be very welcome!

For The Future:-

Fund Raising

A substantial proportion of the funds needed will be sought from grant giving bodies. (Based on various assumptions as to costs, the initial amount needed would be more than £120,000.) In order to show commitment we need to raise funds amongst ourselves. Any ideas from you will be gratefully received!

Public meeting

There will be a public meeting of the Project committee in March (details to be announced) and all residents will be invited to attend.

WEST DOWN COMMUNITY SHOP PROJECT
Update - 9th November 2011

We have now received advice from the Planning Department of the North Devon Council that the Parish Hall grounds are the only viable option for the possible Community Shop.

We have some more things to investigate before we formally approach the Parish Hall Management Committee for their agreement to site the shop in the grounds.

It is hoped that this time next year the shop will be built and fitted out ready to open as the Village Shop closes. Fund applications are in the pipeline and we look forward to involving those people who kindly put their names down as volunteers.

Watch this space for the next update!

NOTICE OF NEXT MEETING

The next meeting of the West Down Community Shop Project committee will be held on Thursday, 8th December, 2011.

In accordance with the Memorandum of Association, residents are invited, if they wish, to submit ideas for the possible shop in writing before the meeting. Please address your letter to:

Jan Oades, Chair, West Down Community Shop Project Committee, c/o Brook Cottage, West Down, EX34 8NH.

 14th June 2011

We have been busy in the last month exploring the possible use of Pipcott's Workroom behind the shop! Heather needs more room for her soft furnishing business and may vacate her workroom so this could provide the central village location that everyone wants. There are still more things to sort out before we can move forward and get the Committee's first meeting organised so, again, please bear with
43 people have now volunteered to help out in the shop and 19 have now put their names down to help in the creation and running of the shop - we will be in touch with them soon.
Thanks to everyone who completed the Community Shop flier.
We had a good 23.5% return on the fliers delivered.

In the meanwhile, things may go quiet for a while as our options our explored.

But the good news is that a Community Shop appears to be a viable proposition!
