I believe that this photo was taken during the celebrations for the 1911 coronation. They are certainly all dressed up for the occasion. The man in the bowler hat to the right of the policeman is the Alfred Roach, the Postmaster, with his wife Zillah beside him. The small boy in front is their son Richard Roach who would have been 4 at the time of the Coronation

Was this picture taken at the same time? Kingsclose & Kingscott are in their present form- see below

This is a scanned in postcard which has probably been colour washed. Taken probably in the 1920s from the field above Pipcott Caravan site. The brown building to the left was the village bake house. Immediately to the right of the Church is the Manor House and to the right of that Fairview cottage. In front of the tower is a building which is now Austins Hay house but which is listed as a piggery. This is one of the many listed building in the village which are no longer in the same state as when they were listed - or in the case of the chapel no longer exist. The brown (thatched) house on the immediate right is Shutes Cottage. The thatch was replaced when it became almost impossible to insure thatched houses. The field pattern remains the same but there do not appear to be any buildings at Easterground.

This is a postcard of the Square taken in about 1901. Nos. 1-3 Eaton Place have not yet been built. The first house you can see is now Kingsclose & it was thatched. It was the baker's house and burnt down soon after that. The door must have been on the side facing west. The Post Office & Roach's Stores can be seen and other than the demolitiion of the building in front of the Crown Inn, not much has changed.

Thirty plus years later nothing has changed, unless perhaps the road has been surfaced. It seems strange now to see cows with horns. (Newspaper cutting)
