THE DECEMBER MEETING

of the West Down W.I. commenced with singing Jerusalem.

The business  was discussed, much of which had a festive feel. The members attending the  Carol service at Mortehoe plan to lunch at the nearby Chichester Arms before the service, arrangements for travel were made.

The Menus for the new Year Lunch at Patchole Manor were circulated  and numbers finalised.

The correspondence was discussed , the membership subscriptions of £29 . 50 are now due.

 A charity Knit-In is to be held at the Old Vicarage on Jan 28th at 2.30p.m. Please bring materials and, if possible a draw prize.

 An instructor has been located who would come to  future Craft meeting to teach us the art of making and covering boxes. A sewing box design was shown to members and other ideas welcome

A Pudding Lunch and a summer Barbeque were further ideas to be considered

 

Refreshments were served by the Committee and included Mince Pies and Birthday Cake.

 

We than sat back and enjoyed our visiting group of Musicians and singers.  This was  a return visit from “The Music People”. Their singing and playing  of Folk music gave us a feel of travelling around Britain and  beyond and was thoroughly enjoyed.

The competition for a Christmas card depicting a Christmas Carol drew a good entry.  The winners were 1. Janet Tolman, 2.Di Pine, 3 Jane Hayes.  The  winning Flower of the Month was brought by Jan Jones.

 

 THE ANNUAL MEETING

 

 A good attendance and we opened with Jerusalem..

The reports outlined the varied range of speakers and activates we have enjoyed throughout the year these ranged from Police Dogs to Falconry, Pottery to Rag Rugs. There have been regular Craft meetings which learnt bead work, crochet and more, we now meet in the afternoons.

 In addition to maintaining our finances at a comfortable level we have contributed generously to ACWW, run a McMillan Coffee morning and have just filled 19 shoe boxes for the Samaritans Purse Appeal .

We ran stalls at the Dickensian and Summer Fayres in the village and did an arrangement for the Church flower Festival.

Committee

Toni Buchan the President agreed to continue in this position for one more year, The committee will be the President with Doreen Nicholas, Lydia Odell, Di Pine, Lynne Sinyard. Pippa Stafford, and Ruth Verney. Jean Preece retired from the committee and was thanked for all the work she has done for the Institute.

 Rodger Purle is to be thanked for his help as Independent Examiner

. A list of various posts was circulated and volunteers were requested, these include helping with the market stall, Tea Hostess rota, Competitions and more.

The trophy for the winner of most points in the monthly competitions throughout the year was a tie between Jan Jones and Margaret Thomas, runners up were Jane Hayes and Sue Robbins who also tied.

Following refreshments which included a lovely Birthday Cake made by a member, wine and nibbles we all took part in a Pudding Quiz. This proved quite a challenge with 22 questions on puddings ranging from what is the Clootie in Clootie Dumpling to which ingredient is in the centre of a Sussex Pond Pudding . The winning team was Muriel Hookway and Jane Hayes The F.O.M. was won by Janet Tolman.

There was a book and magazine stall in aid of ACWW which was well supported.

The December meeting will be enjoying Folk Music with a Christmas twist, and the competition a Christmas card depicting a Carol. We agreed to run a stall at the Dickensian Fayre on December 11. Cakes and produce will be welcome.

Members attended the Autumn Group Social at Croyde which was very enjoyable.

The North Devon area Carol Service is this year at St Mary's Church Mortehoe on December 17 at 2.30.p.m.

Names were taken for the County trip to Slimbridge Wildfowl Trust in January.

Our New Year Lunch in January has been arranged to be held at Patchole Manor at Kentisbury.
